IM Innovations (IM) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Singapore Polytechnic (SP) on 26th November 2008 to train a local pool of visual effects artists who want to work on regional or international blockbuster movies in the future.
Under the MOC, both parties will collaborate on training, consultancy and joint project development in the areas of visual effects (including 3D painting) and games development to meet the growing demands in both the education and commercial sector. A Visual Effects Lab will be set up in SP campus and IM will contribute 50 units of Upgrade Educational License from CINEMA 4D core to CINEMA 4D Studio Bundle software package to kick start the collaboration. The package consists of NET Render (unlimited clients licenses), Sketch and Toon, BodyPaint3D, Advanced Render, MOCCA, MoGraph, Thinking Particles, HAIR and Dynamics.
CINEMA 4D is a professional 3D modelling, painting, animation and rendering solution, which is widely used by Hollywood’s movie studios to develop the awesome visual effects in movies such as Golden Compass, Spiderman, Incredible Hulk and Pirates of the Caribbean. The pioneer users to benefit from this collaboration are forty students from SP’s School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT) taking the CG Effects Option in the Diploma in Digital Media. Using the latest technology in the market, students will learn to develop visual effects.
Managing Director of IM, Mr Vincent Ong said, “We are moving fast and furious in the area of digital media and now is the right time to speed up the efforts in visual effects. This collaboration is the right step to take. We have the best tools which are easy to use but we need to train talents to use the tools right here in Singapore. Otherwise, we will not have our own visual effects artists. Neither can we attract world-class visual effects companies to do work here.”
SP’s Director for the school of DMIT, Mr Timothy Chan said, “The collaboration is critical in developing the creativity of our digital media students. Now they have the chance to be trained in using one of the most advanced animation and visual effects software tools, without having to go overseas. They can get a very good grounding in SP and move on to receive advanced training when they graduate, whether on the job or taking up specialised course.” IM will also offer internship opportunities for SP’s staff and students. In addition to that, talks, seminars, workshops and short courses in the field of visual effects and games development will be organised regularly.
