IM Innovations congratulates winners of National Infocomm Club Awards 2009

January 29, 2010

The students of East View Primary beamed with pride at the National Infocomm Club Awards 2009.

Even though it was a completely new experience for them, the Primary 4 & 5 students from the ICT club managed to beat other returning competitors to clinch the Merit award in the Primary School category. Only three awards were given out in each category and they were ecstatic to emerge the runner-up.

Their winning project, ‘Our Aspirations’ is a video featuring the various sports played during the Youth Olympic Games and highlights the importance of perseverance. This clip was brought to life through the use of 3D graphics and animation, a state-of-the-art technique the students have picked up in school.

Sharing in joy, Ms Jasmine Kwok, East View Primary ICT club teacher, said “This achievement serves as an encouragement to the pupils that their hard work has been recognized and is a reminder to them that the skills they have been learning are of value in the area of ICT. To the school, it is a reinforcement to spur us on in this direction of developing pupils in 3D animation, and substantiation that pupils’ age as an obstacle to the pupils in this area of development can be overcome“.

Using MAXON CINEMA 4D, the students were able to model the athletes and animate them to perform various actions like swim, run, hop and more. It only took them a few months to be familiar with the software and produce a story in 3D.

Overseeing this program for over a year now, Ms Jasmine Kwok noticed how easily the students were able to familiarize the interface.

She further commented, “CINEMA 4D has shown itself to be a tool that is easy for pupils of different levels to grasp given that (the students) have only attended training for less than a year and yet were able to take up different parts of the projects to complete independently”.

Another successful winner and newcomer in this competition, Northbrooks Secondary School won the Merit award in the Secondary School and JC category. Their masterpiece, “The Opening Ceremony of YOG” showcases a variety of 3D animated objects from a blazing torch to flag-bearing fighter jets in flight.

Changkat Changi Secondary School students, another new entrant to the NICA Awards, also created an eye-catching animated video using CINEMA 4D and their efforts earned them a place in the finals consisting of 6 secondary schools. One thing was certain. It was clear that all participating schools had benefited from the experience and forged strong bonds with their fellow ICT Club members along the way.

IM Innovations sends their heartiest congratulations to East View Primary, Northbrooks and Changkat Changi Secondary.
