Want to find more about the history of early Singapore? Just walk up to virtual characters like Sir Stamford Raffles and ask him.
This is what 250 Primary 4 pupils from Pasir Ris Primary School will get to do at the beginning of 2011 when the school introduces a virtual world of old Singapore into its Social Studies curriculum. Called Singapore History Alive with 3D!, it is a game where pupils can explore the virtual environment, speaking to historical characters like Sir Stamford Raffles, Singapore's First Resident William Farquhar, and the Temenggong of Johor to learn about the nation's history. The project, partly funded by the Media Development Authority (MDA), aims to complement and not replace the teaching of Social Studies through traditional classroom lessons. Digital Life, a weekly supplement of the main daily, The Straits Times, featured this pilot project on 23 February 2011.
