Creative 3D Visualisation Seminar at Toa Payoh Public Library

March 11, 2016

On the 8th March, IM Innovations and Adobe Creative Crew (Adobe User group in Singapore), held a collaborative seminar at Toa Payoh Public Library’s Programme Zone, with guest speakers Dionisius Kartalaksana and Ong Min Yu to share their industry experience and their creative workflow.

Dionisius, or Dion for short, was the first speaker for the event. Dion graduated from NTU School of Art, Design, and Media. Currently he is an Art Director and 3D Designer based in Singapore, and has worked on creative projects in production companies such as CRITICA TV and Abundant Productions. Clients he has worked with include Sony, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paypal and Great Eastern. Currently he runs his own studio, One Hour Gallery. Dion shared his workflow with the audience, emphasising greatly on the ideation process and effective creative concepts. He starts off the initial phase of his projects with creative ideas, researching images that builds on the style. Next, he draws storyboards and creates mood boards for a stronger visualisation of the project. Dion then uses Cinema 4D and Adobe Affect Effects to bring these ideas to life in the final video.

Min Yu, the second speaker for the event, has worked in the film and video industry for almost 10 years. He started as a broadcast graphics designer at The Moving Visuals Co. before moving on to companies like Emoxis and Abundant Productions. Currently, he leads the creative team at Little Red Ants Creative Studio. He has been involved in client works ranging from agency works to channel promos, broadcast titles, TVCs, short films and "run of the mill" corporate videos for both the government and private sector. During the seminar, Min Yu demonstrated the difference between the process of bringing a Cinema 4D project over to After Effects in the past and in the present. Today, the Cineware plugin allows for seamless integration between the two software, drastically reducing the amount of work required for this process. This allows him to devote his time to creativity as opposed to the tedious workflows of the past.

With the advancement of technology, software like Cinema 4D are increasingly affordable, simple to learn and use. The audience, many of which are new to the world of 3D software, were shown that what used to take many man-hours to produce only requires a fraction of time with today’s technology. Artists are no longer hampered by the complexity of the tools and can spend more time to focus on their creativity and visual expressions.
